The Chief Communications Officer (CCO) provides vision and leadership to advance brand visibility; strengthen thought leadership; influence public opinion; and inspire engagement. They will ensure all communications are compelling to target audiences and meet the highest standards of quality and consistency.

The CCO will lead and motivate a large and growing team to focus on public relations, marketing, multi-media, and creative services, and serve as a strategic partner to the President & CEO to ensure the implementation of strategies and tactics that affectively attract constituents to engage with the LIRS mission. The CCO will serve on the Leadership team and report directly to the President & CEO.

DUTIES

  • In partnership with the President & CEO, develop, set and guide the strategy for communications and marketing, to include website, digital marketing, media and public relations messaging and collateral to consistently articulate LIRS's mission and ensure that LIRS is viewed as the leading source, disseminator, and conduit of information within the immigration field, network and constituent base.
  • In Partnership with Press Secretary, oversee a strategic media plan to reach and stretch LIRS' media relations and brand goals
  • Oversee the cultivation of relationships with journalists through one-on-one meetings, briefings, and regular phone and email communications to help grow LIRS' media presence and brand awareness.
  • Review all communications material prior to distribution, including op-eds, social media, publications, videos, and website content.
  • Craft and curate the LIRS brand through strategic communications and marketing planning and creative direction.
  • Sets goals, monitor work and evaluate results to ensure that departmental objectives and operating requirements are met and are in line with the needs and mission of the organization.
  • Initiate, direct/oversee, and evaluate strategic multi-media campaigns and activities, including but not limited to, digital marketing, media relations, organization representation, publications, websites, and social media that advance the LIRS brand with target audiences.
  • Partner with senior leadership, and key staff on messaging strategies, cultivating leadership "voices" and leveraging opportunities to raise visibility of LIRS and its positions.
  • Track innovations and trends in marketing and communications; monitor trends and developments in public opinion, both national and audience specific, regarding immigration issues.
  • Other related duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Undergraduate degree in marketing, communications, public relations, or other relevant degree or equivalent experience; graduate degree in Communications or Business Administration strongly preferred.
  • 10-15 years of progressive work experience in marketing, communications, media and public relations or related field with at least 7 years of progressively responsible experience managing staff responsible for social media, communications and/or marketing. Strong management skills are essential.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent after hours and weekend work needed
  • Exceptional communication skills, able to listen actively; speak and write persuasively and inspirationally.
  • Acts as key strategic advisor to President & CEO on all media opportunities, including positioning and preparation of the CEO for interviews and other press engagements
  • Exceptional strategic thinking and analytical skills; able to discern, plan, and evaluate courses of action.
  • Exceptional creative direction skills; able to ensure translation of the brand's image and voice into compelling marketing collateral and publications.
  • A high degree of initiative; able to conceptualize, articulate, and cultivate collaboration in innovative strategies.
  • Ability to manage, inspire, and lead staff, and to manage and inspire "up" - successfully involving leadership and other influencers in marketing and communications.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and evaluating effective integrated marketing campaigns preferably in a faith-based and/or cause-based context at both national and local levels.
  • Experience overseeing, analyzing, and applying market, audience, and stakeholder research.
  • Demonstrated ability and success in the planning, development, and implementation of websites and other online vehicles. Experience and knowledge of working with technical team/production managers to extend traditional programs/media collateral to the web.

Essential Skills/Knowledge

  • Excellent skills in writing and editing for a variety of audiences via numerous platforms, including writing for online and mobile. Knowledge of Chicago and/or AP Style preferred.
  • Previous experience in a Non-Profit Organization highly preferred
  • Existing media relationships in national and key designated market areas preferred
  • PR Agency, news media or political campaign experience preferred
  • Excellent knowledge of Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint applications, and Adobe suite
  • Broad fundamental communications and media relations knowledge
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of work records
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Knowledge of immigration and refugee world a plus
  • Deep commitment to LIRS's core values and ability to model those values in relationships with colleagues and partners.
