Reporting to the Manager of Advocacy, the Migrant Children & Families Advocacy Officer will work as part of a fast-paced advocacy team by helping LIRS to advance its public policy and regulatory efforts in support of migrant children and asylum-seekers impacted by US Government immigration policy.

  • Expanding the reach of LIRS's mission by engaging in legal, policy and political advocacy to hold the US Government accountable for harmful policies impacting migrant children and their families, and strategizing on tactics that will promote and ensure family unification.
  • Conducting research, as assigned, on a variety of legal and policy issues pertaining to civil and human rights violations impacting migrant children and their families.
  • Engaging in non-litigation advocacy, including developing responses to notices of federal rulemaking and other policy changes, FOIA requests, affidavits, advocacy materials, and educational campaigns.
  • Meeting with legislative offices and preparing relevant expert materials, testimony, and follow up
  • Working closely with and providing political landscape, policy and legal analysis to coalition partners and other relevant stakeholders in support of LIRS's public policy agenda and programs.
  • Collaborating and supporting the work of other LIRS functions.
  • Building and deepening relationships with partners, coalitions, and stakeholders.
  • Serving as a registered federal lobbyist on behalf of LIRS.
  • Responding to third-party inquiries and referrals related to his or her portfolio.


  • A law degree or the equivalent, or a master's degree in a related field such as public policy, in combination with 4-6 years of relevant work experience.
  • Hill experience preferred.
  • Expertise on children rights, immigration, appropriations, civil rights, homeland security, and/or other relevant issues strongly preferred.
  • Ability to conduct complex legal analysis and fact-finding research, and to forecast legislative and regulatory trends.
  • Excellent research, writing, and verbal communication skills.
  • A high degree of familiarity with the Central American region, including the political landscape, migration patterns, and US- Central America relations.
  • Familiarity with child welfare principles and practice, as well as with immigration laws relevant to child migrants, and asylum law, policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Understanding of social services delivery by the nonprofit sector.
  • Proven ability to maintain strict standards of confidentiality.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team.
  • Experience with and commitment to working in a very diverse workforce.
  • Deep commitment to LIRS's core mission and values and an ability to model those values in relationship with colleagues, and partners.
  • Willingness and ability to travel 5-10% annually.
  • Fluency in Spanish preferred.
