DUTIES:

  • Promote the public mission and advocacy efforts of the largest faith-based organization dedicated exclusively to serving refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants in the U.S.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the strategic media plan to achieve LIRS' media relations goals
  • Act as key strategic advisor to the Press Secretary and President's Office on all media opportunities, including positioning and preparing LIRS experts for interviews and other public engagements
  • Proactively pitch news stories of LIRS' work, programs and events; produce press releases and other materials to engage media
  • Cultivate personal relationships with journalists through one-on-one meetings, briefings, and regular phone and email communications to help grow LIRS' media presence and brand awareness
  • Develop creative strategies for communicating with journalists in addition to and beyond traditional news releases
  • Coordinate interviews, draft press releases, produce rapid-response commentary, and provide journalists with timely and accurate information
  • Draft, pitch and place opinion editorials and letters to the editor in local, national and online publications on behalf of senior staff, faith leaders, and refugee leaders
  • Execute multi-channel promotion of LIRS media events
  • Leverage social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and relevant PR and media monitoring software.
  • Contribute to industry reputational efforts, including earned and paid media strategies
  • Develop and nurture relationships with LIRS partners to build communications capacity and increase external visibility
  • Coordinate with and ensure optimal performance of PR firm support
  • Report on progress of media relations efforts and identify opportunities for growth and improvement
  • Secondary Duties
  • Manage and implement other projects as identified by other members of the leadership team
  • Work on special projects and other duties as required helping to promote department's success.
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA or BS with emphasis on language and journalism or relevant work experience
  • Demonstrated experience in communication and media outreach
  • Commitment to LIRS's core mission and values and an ability to model those values in relationship with colleagues and partners; commitment to empowering refugees and migrants.

DESIRED SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE

  • Excellent writer and editor, adept at writing for a variety of audiences via numerous platforms
  • Existing media relationships in national and key markets highly desired
  • Ability to persuasively communicate complex concepts and programs at the highest levels of government and business
  • Broad fundamental communications and media relations knowledge
  • Agency, news media or political campaign experience
  • Ability to work both as part of a team and independently
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and time-management management skills
  • Demonstrative abilities in collaborative team building and consensus
  • Exceptional analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Team player, able to work cross-departmentally
  • Ability to cope with a fast-paced work environment and juggle multiple priorities, separating mission critical from the non-strategic with minimal supervision
  • At ease with a fluid environment; persistent and tenacious
  • Strong character and high integrity
  • Ability to learn additional software programs, and enter and maintain accurate data/information
  • Knowledge of immigration and refugee issues
